Making Quilts and Building Beds for Kids in Need

By Penny Marble & Jean Brecker

The Stitchery in Alden, NY, and the Caledonia Quilt Guild have partnered with the Buffalo and Rochester chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) to provide warm quilts for children in need! Founded in 2012 after discovering that many children in a small Idaho town went to bed without a bed to call their own, SHP has grown into a significant movement with 350 chapters and over 250,000 beds delivered. The numbers of bedless children are sobering.

Our community mission is to provide SHP with twin size quilts for children aged 3 – 17. We are counting on more than just our membership, putting the call out to all quilters to join us in this event. We are taking donations of new, completed twin-sized quilts throughout the year for delivery to both local chapters of SHP. Each quilt will be adorned with a label featuring the quilter’s first name, and a note of inspiration to the recipient. In addition to quilts, we are also accepting pillowcases or twin-sized sheet sets. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to:

Or, check to see if you have a local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace and donate there!

While we don’t have a specific goal in mind, we are hoping to provide quilts to as many children as we can throughout the coming year. We ask everyone with the ability to do so take up the challenge to make a twin-size quilt or a pillowcase for the cause. These kids deserve better, and it’s up to the community – our community – the quilting community – to help provide that. Visit The Stitchery’s website for additional information.
